Pointers as Pets

Pointers can make wonderful family pets but any potential owner must be aware of the work that will be involved in training and exercising their dog before taking on this wonderful breed.

A pointer is breed to gallop and work a long way away from their handler, and it is essential for a truly content pointer that they are allowed daily exercise which includes plenty of off lead galloping. A huge house and garden are not essential if the dog is taken out and allowed to free run. Because of the way the pointer has been bred to work it is essential that training is commenced as soon as the new puppy comes home, work on recall and the "drop" should be the cornerstones of training work, then you can be far more confident in allowing off lead exercise.  All family members should be involved in training and consistency is very important, a whistle can be very useful as it will sound the same no matter who is using it and can travel further than your voice. Try to always ensure that your commands are followed up, don't call your dog back then give up when it ignores you, this just teaches the dog that it is ok to ignore you!

A pointer will be very happy in the family home and will quickly make itself very comfortable on any available sofa, bed or lap if allowed and they really are a wonderful addition to the family!

Puppies

We hope to have our first litter of puppies from Fifi in due course. All being well this will be sometime in 2012, we have not yet selected the sire, but would hope that it will be one that shares Fifi's dual show/working lines.
